Attala Homeschoolers Group Holds Career Day

The Attala Homeschoolers group held a career day event on March 11. The event was organized as an opportunity for homeschool students to learn about the various career paths available to them and encourage them to ask questions, explore their interests, and think about possible careers. The goal for the career day was “Kids asking questions, there is nothing more natural than their curiosity! That leads to books about farming, fire fighters, and lessons on banking and entrepreneurship,” said event organizer and homeschooling mom Sonya Haidet.

The inspiration behind this event was to provide homeschool students with exposure to a wide range of potential careers at an early age, and to give them the opportunity to ask questions of professionals in those career fields, and potentially spark and interest in pursuing on of those careers, said Haidet.

The event hosted nine professionals who shared facts about their careers and job opportunities within those careers. These participants were Max Burdine from Kosciusko Police Department, Darren Milner from Bank of Commerce, Attala County Library Children’s Librarian Brittany Williams, writer Justin Riley, Attala County Fire Department Captain Jarrett Keith, farmer Aaron Stovall with Dry Bottom Farms and Nursery, Peggy Davide with Piggles Gifts & More, Miranda Burchfield with Miranda Burchfield Photography, LLC and The Beehive Bulletin, and Samantha Clark, teacher’s aid with the Special Education Department of the Kosciusko School District.

After the event, fourth-grader Donna Altstatt said “I liked talking with the writer, that was my favorite part!” and was inspired to read more books. Her younger sister Liberty Altstatt, who is in the second grade, enjoyed visiting each table, talking with the participants, and collecting the themed coloring sheets that were distributed. Her favorite profession to learn about was banking.

Haidet said she would like to especially thank the participants, as well as the parents who came out and brought their children. “These families make this group a community,” she said. This event was held with permission of the Attala County Library in the library’s meeting room but was not hosted by the library. The Attala Homeschoolers group is an organization of Christian homeschoolers and hosts informal community activities and provides homeschool support and educational opportunities.
